James had been promised a little time with the rest of the group who lived at the ranch. But he had most certainly not been prepared for just what that had meant.

He had been led to a large room in the back of the sprawling house where at least two dozen people sat on chairs or on the floor in a circle. Guru Krishna sat on an overstuffed chair at the far end of the room, overseeing the proceedings. James was ordered to stand in the centre, while Joe and Dan listed the litany of James’ supposed “sins” and the many reasons why he was unworthy to draw breath.

“Yeah, Rich Kid here, he seems to think the world owes him. He’s been pouting for years, while his rich parents gave him everything a kid could want,” sneered Joe, facing the guru.

“Never enough for ya, was it, Jimmy?” added Dan. “Still thought you had a right to be pissed off at them for what you perceived to be their infractions.”

“And of course, they’re no better,” added Joe. “I mean, they checked out on you. They’re so wrapped up in their big money and big house and looking perfect, they haven’t really been so great, have they, now, Jimmy?” He shoved James hard in the shoulder, causing him to stumble.

Regaining his balance, James was seething as he fought the urge to pound Joe in the head and give him the beating of his life. Don’t do it don’t do it don’t do it! But God, I wanna kill you, you rotten son-of-a-bitch!

“Okay, everyone, your turn!” Joe grinned sadistically. “Let’s tell James the truth of who he and his family are!”

One after another, everyone present had something nasty to throw at James about his materialistic parents, or about what a piece of shit he was, or how entirely unlovable and undeserving he was as a human being. For three hours, he stood and tolerated this barrage of insults and after the week he had endured, it was almost more than he could bear.

It had been bad enough being holed up with those two morons hammering away at him for several days but this was a whole new level of psychological battering. If he so much as pursed his lips giving away the slightest hint of anger, he was berated.

And there came a point when he was also threatened.

“Perhaps we need to step up our efforts to make you learn,” commented the guru, folding his arms across his chest and giving Joe a nod.

The large man moved to a position directly in front of James and leaned down so that their faces were about two inches apart. With an enormous upraised fist gripping a wooden club, through clenched teeth he spat quietly, “Is that how you want us to do this? Because whatever it takes, this is a battle you’re never gonna win.”

On top of James’ physically weakened and deprived state and already waffling on many of the points the group had made about him, his heart sank.
